After the tough question and answer, 22-year-old Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete was crowned as the Miss Universe 2010 on Monday, August 23 (Tuesday, August 24, Manila Time).

1st runner up: Miss Jamaica Yendi Philipps

2nd runner up: Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell

3rd runner up: Miss Urkraine Anna Poslavska
4th runner up: Miss Philippines Venus Raj

Jimena Navarrete was first to answer an interview question Monday night and the last of 83 contestants standing in the headline-grabbing pageant on the Las Vegas Strip.

Navarrete's one-strap gown flowed behind her as she held it out like a cape. Earlier she smiled in a violet bikini as she confidently strutted across the stage.

Navarrete was asked whether kids should use the Internet unsupervised and said the Internet is an indispensable tool of our time. (With reports from AP)

Bb. Pilipinas International 2009 Melody Gersbach dies in a car accident around 11 a.m. today, August 21, 2010, at Bula Town, Camarines Sur.

Melody Gersbach, together with her make-up artist Alden Orense, and driver were on their way to Naga City for the Miss Bicolandia beauty pageant when their Toyota Innova collided with a passenger bus at around 11:00 a.m. The three died on the spot.

The driver of the bus identified as Wilson Pontillas has surrendered to the police in nearby Pili town.
Gerbach represented our country in the 2009 Miss International pageant where she was among the 16 semi-finalists.

Venus Raj‘s national costume was designed by Stella Araneta‘s friend Alfredo Barraza. The Colombian designer is also the creator of Raj’s evening gown that she will wear in the preliminary competition. Barraza was also the culprit designer of the evening gowns worn by some of our previous delegates in Miss Universe.

Beauty, poise, and outstanding wit—that is what it takes to be a Miss Universe winner. But does one even remember when was the last time the Philippines bagged a title in what is considered to be the most glamorous beauty pageant in the world?

Since the triumph of Margarita Moran (now Mrs. Floreindo) in 1973, the closest the Philippines got to winning the Miss Universe title was when Miriam Quiambao placed 1st runner up in 1999.
Now comes this alluring lady, Maria Venus Bayonito Raj, who despite the controversies which hounded her, has seemed to reignite the flame of hope among our countrymen that the Philippines, this time, could have a big chance in actually winning the Miss Universe title to be held at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Aug. 23.

Raj made her mark as the first crowned Binibining Pilipinas Universe to be dethroned--because of inconsistencies of her birth records—then taken back again due to insistent demand not only on her part but also from the stream of fans who petitioned and initiated a signature campaign just so she could represent the country in this year’s Miss Universe.

In fact, it has been reported that in the ongoing voting in missuniverse.com, Raj remained number one with Miss Venezuela coming in next to her.

"Everything that happened, God plotted it. After my experience, I knew myself better and I became a stronger person. If it hadn’t happened, I would just be an ordinary candidate," she said in an interview.

Raj’s simple lifestyle and humble beginnings can be considered a possible factor connected effectively to her supporters. Back home in Camarines Sur, she lived solely with her mother in a nipa hut without electricity in the middle of a rice field in a town called Bato for 20 years. She once said in an interview that walking on a rice field dike served as an early training for her for walking on fashion runways.

"Before, I only dreamed of building my mother a house and finishing my studies. The opportunities that came my way broadened my horizons," Raj said at her send-off party last Aug. 3.

Despite the exotic appeal and outstanding facial feautures, this 22-year old proves herself worthy for the description: "beauty and brains". She graduated cum laude in Communication Arts, major in Journalism at Bicol University in Albay under a scholarship granted by Francis Papica Foundation.

As she prepares for what is yet to be the highlight of her career, Raj chose to keep a low profile despite the extravagant offers handed to her by rich and influential people so as to protect her image being the country’s pageant representative.

"We just rode taxis and rented a cheap apartment in Pasay during the months of our trainings. Anyway, I am not used to comfortable living being poor myself." She added.

Raj also revealed that one of the things that is keeping her composed despite the pressure, physical training, and mental drills is her faith in God. She was reported to have come back to her hometown in Bicol before leaving for the US to seek blessing and praying over the pastor of a Christian congregation that she was a member of.

Maria Venus Bayonito Raj (born July 7, 1988) is one of the three reigning 2010 Binibining Pilipinas winners. She was crowned Binibining Pilipinas Universe on March 06, 2010 during the pageant's Grand Coronation Night at the Araneta Coliseum [1]. However, on March 29, 2010, Ms. Raj was dethroned by the pageant's organizers (BPCI) citing "inconsistencies" between her birth certificate and the personal account of her birth. Ms. Raj was briefly replaced by second runner-up Helen Nicolette Henson. Ms. Raj's sudden dethronement caused an uproar among her Filipino supporters in Bicol, Metro Manila, and other cities including pageant fans in other countries that she was encouraged to fight to reclaim her crown. Some conducted online petitions, signature campaigns, Facebook fan pages, blogs, demand letters to BPCI and some even went on up to writing the Miss Universe Organization. So much so that on April 10, 2010, after days of uproar by many pageant fans, the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) reversed their decision.

Citing "humanitarian reasons" the BPCI allowed Ms. Raj to reclaim her title pending correction of the minor technicalities or clerical error contained on her birth record and her obtainment of a valid Philippine passport. On May 19, 2010, the Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) issued a Philippine passport to Ms. Raj. The DFA stated that Ms. Raj is, indeed, a Philippine citizen by virtue of the jus sanguinis principle (“right of blood”), a basic right provided by the Philippine Constitution which bestows upon a person the citizenship of his father or mother regardless of where the person was born. Based on this constitutional principle, along with interviews and documents provided by Ms. Raj, the DFA's Citizenship Evaluation Committee decided to grant Ms. Raj a Philippine passport, clearing the way for her reinstatement as the Philippines' official candidate to the Miss Universe 2010 pageant.

Early life
Raj was born out of wedlock in Doha, Qatar, but she was taken to Bato, Camarines Sur in the Bicol Region, Philippines as an infant when her Filipino mother and Indian father separated. It was her mother, a tenant farmer and dressmaker, who solely brought her up as a child.

Raj had lived in a nipa hut made of wood, bamboo and anahaw leaves with no electricity in the middle of a sprawling rice field in the rural Bato town for more than 20 years. She claimed that walking on a rice paddy dike was her early training for walking on fashion runways.

The youngest in a brood of five children, Raj started joining local beauty pageants when she was 17 years old, as well as oratorical contests at San Vicente High School. Maria Lourdes Pili, her English teacher, served as her coach for the oratorical contests. With her winnings in major contests, she started to buy land on installment basis for her mother.

Education and Work
Raj finished her bachelor's degree in Communications Arts, major in Journalism, at Bicol University in Albay, with Latin honors (cum laude). She was able to finish college thru the scholarship that she received from Francis Papica Foundation. Currently, she is working as an Information Assistant for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region IV. In addition, she works as a fashion model and shuttles between Bicol and Manila for modeling assignments.

Miss Philippines Earth Eco Tourism title
Following her winning as Ms. Bicolandia 2007,[6] Raj competed in the Miss Philippines-Earth 2008, and was named as Miss Philippines Earth Eco Tourism 2008. She was crowned on May 11, 2008 at Crowne Plaza Galleria, Manila, by the previous year's winner, Anna Katrina Bautista.

Dethronement as Binibining Pilipinas-Universe
In the days leading up to the dethronement, questions about Raj's birth certificate were posed by Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) officials. She was later invited to sit down with BPCI's lawyers. Raj was told that there were inconsistencies between her birth certificate which listed the Philippines as her birthplace and her own personal account in which she said she was born in Qatar, in addition to other inconsistencies in her birth documents. At that meeting, Raj was given two options: resign or be dethroned. Raj refused either option and sought legal counsel.

Chairwoman Leila de Lima of the Commission on Human Rights, Senator Loren Legarda, Ms. Bicolandia organization, Representative Liza Maza of Gabriela, Albay Governor Joey Salceda and Dante Jimenez of Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) deplored the decision made by the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) and expressed their desire to help Raj. On the social networking site Facebook, thousands of her friends and fans expressed frustration and anger at the pageant organizer’s decision to take back the crown from Raj.

Raj planned to take legal action to combat BPCI's decision in court, but she also weighed in on her decision because of its potential impact to her future career. Lawyer Francis Padua Papica, who sponsored Raj’s college education, and another counsel volunteered to defend her for free. Through Rafa Delfin, director of the website www.criticalbeauty.com, an appeal regarding Raj's case was sent to the Miss Universe Organization regarding the issue.

In a local TV appearance, Raj stated that a representative from Miss Universe Organization talked to her and looked into her case. In the same interview, she said, “My fight is now more than just chasing a dream. It is about clearing my soiled reputation. It is about standing up for people who are poor and born out of wedlock. It is a fight for acceptance."

Former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz had earlier advised Raj to "let go" of the title and just join again in 2011 on the basis that BPCI speaks with finality and always has the last say. Yet true to Ms. Raj's being Miss Friendship title, she was very amiable in saying that although she respect Ms. Diaz's opinion, she was not willing to let go and still would persist in reclaiming her title.

Reinstatement as Binibining Pilipinas-Universe
In a seeming effort to appease the public, the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) announced on April 10, 2010, that it will allow the reinstatement of dethroned 2010 Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Maria Venus Raj if she would be able to secure a "valid Philippine passport. All measures were undertaken by Ms. Raj's camp at the Department of Foreign Affairs with optimism that this rather trivial condition is met. With this development, Ms. Venus Raj now holds the record as the first-ever dethroned Miss Philippines to have successfully staged an attempt for a reinstatement of the Binibibining Pilipinas crown.

A feat that disqualied Filipina beauties like Anjanette Abayari, Janelle Bautista, Tisha Silang (all Binibining Pilipinas - Universe titlist) and even Binibining Pilipinas- World 2008, Janina San Miguel who allegedly "resigned", all failed to accomplish. Other previous controversies which did not merit the attention of BPCI and the public include the ouster of stunning beauties like fashion models Joey Mead and Sandra Siefert and dusky actress Juliana Palermo. Also, the stir (allegedly due to massive irregularities and unfulfilled promises) that gorgeous actress Janine Barredo raised after losing at the Binibining Pilipinas 1994 never stunned the once invincible BPCI.

The 24 official Bb. Pilipinas 2009 candidates were introduced to the media Friday at the Mandarin Suites in Gateway Mall.

Included in the 24 is Starstruck alum Rich Asuncion using her real name Richell Angalot.

“I truly believe in my self. Hindi ako pumunta rito na bara-bara lang. I prepared for this, gumagawa ako ng paraan para maging okey ako sa competition,” said Rich in a short interview with 24 Oras.

Also included in the competition are Abigail Cruz, the girlfriend of Paolo Bediones, and Ma. Paula Bianca Paz, the girlfriend of Polo Ravales.

The coronation night is happening on March 7, 2009 as televised on GMA-7.

Karla Paula Ginteroy Henry is a Philippine beauty queen and a Cebu-based model.
She will represent the Philippines at the Miss Earth 2008 pageant to be held at Clark Expo in Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines on November 9, 2008.

Pageantry
In 2006, Karla joined the Miss Cebu pageant in Cebu City where she placed as 2nd runner-up.

She gained attention when she joined the prestigious Binibining Pilipinas in March 2008. Although considered as a heavy favorite, she was unplaced in the finals.

Karla again competed at the Miss Philippines Earth 2008 pageant representing Cebu City. It was held at the Crowne Plaza Galleria in Ortigas, Mandaluyong City in May 11, 2008. She made it to the initial cut of ten semi-finalists and competed in the traditional swimsuit, interview and evening gown competitions. She advanced to the top six in the final question and answer round. At the conclusion of the pageant, she was crowned Miss Philippines Earth 2008 by the outgoing titleholder Jeanne Angeles Harn.

Turismo Pilipina Charities, Inc. is a non-stock and non- profit organization that will mount an annual pageant – Turismo Pilipina.

Turismo Pilipina will be a national beauty pageant to be held annually to select the country’s tourism ambassadors, who will also represent the Philippines in international tourism pageants.

Qualifications:

-Open to natural-born Filipinas who are eager to contribute to the tourism promotions of the Philippines, 18-25 years old, at least 5’5, single and never been married or given birth, of good moral standing, possessing beauty of face and figure, at least a high school graduate, and has a good knowledge of Philippine tourism and the Philippines in general.

76 beauties are currently in China vying for the first ever Miss Leisure. The first special award, Miss Smile, was grabbed by our very own Sarah Katrina Miñoza. Netherlands and Venezuela were 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Sarah Katrina Miñoza, a 23-year-old student, is currently competing in Suzhou, China with 75 other delegates from around the globe. The winner of the first edition of Miss Leisure will win 10,000 US dollars and a crown.

The main objective of the beauty pageant is to develop the infrastructure of tourism in Suzhou, China, as well as strengthening the friendly and cultural ties between the participating countries from different corners of the world to Suzhou and also in support of the program of development of tourism in this city.

The coronation night of Miss Leisure 2008 is happening on June 27, 2008.
